Planning makeup across several wedding functions
Engagement, mehendi, wedding and reception: how to give each look its own character without losing yourself.
A Kerala wedding is rarely one day. Between the engagement, the mehendi or haldi, the wedding and the reception, a bride may be photographed in four or five different looks. Planned well, they tell a story. Planned separately, they can blur into each other or feel like different people.
Decide the arc first
Think of the looks as a sequence rather than separate events. A common pattern is to start soft and build: a fresh, light look for the engagement or haldi, a classic look for the wedding ceremony, and the boldest look for the reception. Some brides reverse it and keep the wedding the most traditional, with a playful mehendi.
Whichever you choose, keep one thread through all of them, such as your eye shape, your skin's finish or a favourite lip tone, so you still look like yourself in every album.
Daytime and evening
Light changes everything. Daytime functions, often outdoors or in bright halls, need a fresh base and softer colour. Evening receptions under stage lights and flash need more definition around the eyes and a little more colour, or the face can look flat in photographs. See reception makeup and mehendi, haldi and madhuramveppu for more.
Hair across functions
Hair can change more than makeup between looks: open waves for the engagement, flowers for the mehendi, a traditional bun with jasmine for the wedding, a sleeker style for the reception. Share every outfit early so the hair plan works with the jewellery and the dupatta or veil.
Same-day changes
Wedding and reception on the same day is common. A change from a daytime ceremony look to an evening reception look can be planned, but it needs time in the schedule. Tell your makeup artist the timings of both.
Questions brides ask
Should every wedding function have a different makeup look?
Most brides choose a different look for each function, building from soft daytime looks to a bolder reception look, while keeping one element consistent so they look like themselves throughout.
Can I change from my wedding look to a reception look on the same day?
Yes, if there is time in the schedule. Share both timings with your makeup artist so the change can be planned.
