Good bridal makeup starts with skin that has been looked after, not skin that has been rushed. The aim is not a perfect complexion. It is skin that is calm, hydrated and predictable on the day, so the makeup sits well and lasts.

Three to six months before

This is the time to sort out anything that needs real treatment. If you have acne, pigmentation or sensitivity that bothers you, see a dermatologist now, not in the final month. Prescription treatments take weeks to settle, and some cause dryness or peeling while they work.

Build a simple routine you can keep: a gentle cleanser, a moisturiser that suits your skin type and sunscreen every day. In Kerala, sunscreen matters more than any serum. Uneven tanning on the face, neck and arms is one of the hardest things to correct with makeup.

One to two months before

Keep the routine steady and avoid experiments. This is not the moment for a new peel, a strong acid or a facial you have never had before. A reaction now can take weeks to calm down.

If you want a facial, choose a gentle, hydrating one you have had before, and book the last one at least a week before the wedding, never in the final few days.

Drink water through the day and protect your sleep where you can. Both show on the skin more than most products.

The final two weeks

Stop anything new. No new products, no threading or waxing on the face in the last few days if your skin tends to react, and no bleach. Book threading and waxing a few days ahead so any redness has time to settle.

If you are having a trial, tell your makeup artist what your skin has been doing: dry patches, breakouts, sensitivity. It changes the products and the preparation used on the day.

The night before

Cleanse gently, moisturise well and go to bed early. Skip heavy masks and anything that tingles. Remove nail polish if you are changing it, and keep your skincare products in one bag so nothing is forgotten in the morning.

On the morning

Arrive with a clean, moisturised face and no makeup. Wear a shirt that buttons at the front so the hair and makeup are not disturbed when you change. Eat something light before you start. Long mornings without food show on the face, and on the mood.

Questions brides ask

When should I get my last facial before the wedding?

At least a week before, and only a gentle facial you have had before. A new or harsh treatment in the final days can cause redness or breakouts that are hard to cover.

Should I stop using retinol before my wedding?

Many dermatologists suggest pausing strong actives such as retinol or exfoliating acids in the last week or so, because they can make the skin dry or flaky under makeup. Ask your own dermatologist what is right for your skin.

What should I put on my face on the wedding morning?

A clean, moisturised face with no makeup. Your makeup artist will prepare the skin before applying anything else.
